The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom

In English: The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom, the Bhagavati

Thus have I once heard:

The Blessed One was staying in Rajagrha at Vulture Peak along with a great community of monks and great community of bodhisattvas, and at that time, the Blessed One fully entered the meditative concentration on the varieties of phenomena called the Appearance of the Profound. At that very time as well, holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, beheld the practice itself of the profound perfection of wisdom, and he even saw the five aggregates as empty of inherent nature. Thereupon, through the Buddha's inspiration, the venerable Sariputra spoke to holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, and said, "Any noble son who wishes to engage in the practice of the profound perfection of wisdom should train in what way?"

When this had been said, holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, spoke to venerable Sariputra and said, "Sariputra, any noble sons or daughters who wish to practice the perfection of wisdom should see this way: they should see insightfully, correctly, and repeatedly that even the five aggregates are empty of inherent nature. Form is empty, emptiness is form, Emptiness is not other than form, form is also not other than emptiness. Likewise, sensation, discrimination, conditioning, and awareness are empty. In this way, Sariputra, all things are emptiness; they are without defining characteristics; they are not born, they do not cease, they are not defiled, they are not undefiled. They have no increase, they have no decrease.

"Therefore, Sariputra, in emptiness there is no form, no sensation, no discrimination, no conditioning, and no awareness. There is no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind. There is no form, no sound, no smell, no taste, no texture, no phenomenon. There is no eye-element and so on up to no mind-element and also up to no element of mental awareness. There is no ignorance and no elimination of ignorance and so on up to no aging and death and no elimination of aging and death. Likewise, there is no suffering, origin, cessation, or path; there is no wisdom, no attainment, and even no non-attainment.

"Therefore, Sariputra, since the bodhisattvas have no obtainments, they abide relying on the perfection of wisdom. Having no defilements in their minds, they have no fear, and passing completely beyond error, they reach nirvana. Likewise, all the Buddhas abiding in the three times clearly and completely awaken to unexcelled, authentic, and complete awakening in dependence upon the perfection of wisdom.

"Therefore, one should know that the mantra of the perfection of wisdom - the mantra of great knowledge, the precious mantra, the unexcelled mantra, the mantra equal to the unequalled, the mantra that quells all suffering - is true because it is not deceptive. The mantra of the perfection of wisdom is proclaimed:

tadyatha - gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha!

Sariputra, a bodhisattva, a great being, should train in the profound perfection of wisdom in that way."

Thereupon, the Blessed One arose for that meditative concentration, and he commended holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being. "Excellent!" he said. "Excellent! Excellent! Noble child, it is just so. Noble child, it is just so. One should practice the profound perfection of wisdom in the manner that you have revealed - the Tathagatas rejoice!" This is what the Blessed One said.

Thereupon, the venerable Sariputra, the holy Avalokitsevara, the bodhisattva, the great being, and that entire assembly along with the world of gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, all rejoiced and highly praised what the Blessed One had said.

Om namo Bhagavatayai Arya-Prajnaparamitayai!

{Bless the beautiful Perfection of Wisdom!}

Koan-se-eum Bosal was in the practice of transcendental wisdom --

in the deep course of wisdom which has gone beyond.

(S)he looked down from on high and saw but five essences of sentient beings --

form, sensation, perception, volition and consciousness --

which, in their own being, were empty.

"Here, Oh Shariputra, Form is Emptiness, Emptiness is Form;

Form does not differ from Emptiness, Emptiness does not differ from Form;

- whatever is Empty, that is Form, whatever is Form, that is Empty!

The same is true of feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness!

Oh Shariputra, all Dharmas are marked with Emptiness:

- they have no beginning and no end;

- they are neither imperfect nor perfect, neither deficient nor complete.

Therefore, Oh Shariputra, in emptiness, the five essences of sentient beings do not exist:

there is no form, no sensation, no perception, no volition, no consciousness.

- There is no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body and no mind.

- There are no forms, sounds, smells, and tastes. There are no touchable or objects of the

mind, no sight organs, no hearing organs, no smelling organs, no taste organs and no mind

consciousness element.

- There is no ignorance or extinction of ignorance, no decay and death, nor extinction of

decay and death.

There is no suffering, no origination, no stopping, no path, no cognition, no attainment,

nor anything to attain.

There is nothing to accomplish and so Bodhisattvas can rely on the Perfection of Wisdom

without trouble.

Being without trouble, they are not afraid.

Having overcome everything upsetting, they attain Nirvana.

All Buddhas who appear in the three periods fully awaken to the utmost, right and perfect

enlightenment because they have relied on the Perfection of Wisdom.

Therefore, one should know the Perfection of Wisdom is the great mantra. It is the

unequaled mantra, the destroyer of suffering.

Because of this truth, listen to the mantra:

Gate, Gate, Paragate, Para Samgate Bodhisvaha!

{Gone, Gone, Gone beyond, gone utterly beyond. Oh, what an Awakening!}

Iti prajnaparamita-hridayam samptam.

´Ù¼¸°¡Áö ½×ÀÓÀÌ ¸ðµÎ °øÇÑ °ÍÀ» ºñÃß¾î º¸°í ¿Â°® ±«·Î¿ò°ú Àç¾ÓÀ» ¸êµµÇß´À´Ï¶ó.

¹Ý¾ß¹Ù¶ó¹Ð´Ù´Â °¡Àå ½ÅºñÇÑ ÁÖ¹®À̸ç, °¡Àå ¹àÀº ÁÖ¹®À̸ç, °¡Àå ³ôÀº ÁÖ¹®À̸ç, ¹«¾ù¿¡µµ °ßÁÙ¼ö ¾ø´Â ÁÖ¹®ÀÌ´Ï, ¿Â°® ±«·Î¿òÀ» ¾ø¾Ö°í Áø½ÇÇÏ¿© Çã¸ÁÇÏÁö ¾Ê´À´Ï¶ó.

Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra

This sutra is the "heart" of the Prajna Paramita Sutras.

This sutra is recited by both Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist.

Reciting this sutra can help cultivate the wisdom.

Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra

Aryavalokitesvaro bodhisattvo gambhirayam prajna paramitayam caryam caramano vyavalikayati sma; panca skandhas, tams ca svabhava- sunyan pasyati sma.

When the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara practiced the Profound Perfection of

Transcedental wisdom, he saw that the Five Aggregates were empty,

thus he overcame all suffering.

iha Sariputra rupam sunyata, sunyataiva rupam. rupan na prthak sunyata, sunyataya na prthag rupam. yad rupam sa synyata, ya sunyata tad rupam. evam eva vedhana- samjna- samskara- vijinani

Sariputra,

form does not differ from emptiness, what is empty does not differ from form.

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.

Feeling, perception, intention, and consciousness are also the same.

iha Sariputra sarva- dharma sunyata- laksana anutpanna aniruddha amalavimala nona na paripurnah. tasmac chariputra sunyatayam na rupam na vedhana na samjna na samskara na vijnanam na caksuh- srotra- ghrana- jihva- kaya- manamsi, na rupa- sabda- gandha- rasa- sprastavya- dharmah, na caksur- dhartu yavan na mano- vijana- dhatuh.

Sariputra,

all things having the nature of emptiness have no beginning and no ending,

they are not defiled and pure, increased or decreased.

Thus, in emptiness, there is no form (shape), no feeling, no perception, no intention,

no consciousness. There is no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind.

Therefore, there is no sight, sound, odor, taste, object, and knowledge.

There is nothing from the visual world to the conscious world.

na vidya navidya na vidyaksayo navidyaksayo yavan na jaramaranam na jaramaranaksayo na dukha- samudaya- nirodha- marga, na jnanam na pratih

There is no ignorance, extinction of ignorance, and so on up to no aging and death,

and also no extinction of aging and death.

There is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no supression of suffering,

no path to annihilation of suffering.

There is no knowing and no obtaining.

tasmad apraptitvad bodhisattvam prajna paramitam asritya viharaty a- cittavaranah cittavarana- nastitvad atrasto viparyasatikranto nisthanirvanah. tryadhvavyavasthitah sarva- buddhah prajna paramitam asrityanuttaram samyak sam bodhim abhisaambuddha

Since nothing can be obtained,

Bodhisattvas realize the Profound Perfection of Transcedent Wisdom,

and so their minds are unhindered.

Because there are no veil, they have no fear, and they are far from incorrect and illusory

thought. They are already in the bliss of Nirvana.

All the Buddhas of the past, present, and future fully accomplish the

Annut-tara-sam-yak-sam-bodhi by realizing the Profound Perfection of Transcedent Wisdom.

tasmaj jnatavyam prajna paramita- mahamantoro mahavidyamantro anuttaramantro samsama- mantra, sarva dukha prasamanah. satyam amithyatvat prajna paramitayam ukto mantra tadyatha:

Therefore,

the Profound Perfection of Transcedent Wisdom is known as the great divine mantra,

the great enlightening mantra, the supreme mantra, the imcomparable mantra,

and the destroyer of all suffering.

This is all true and not a lie.

The mantra of the Profound Perfection of Transcedent Wisdom is said like this:

gate gate paragate para- samgate bodhi svaha

gate gate paragate para- samgate bodhi svaha

ga-te ga-te para-gate para-samgate bodhi SVAHA!
